The communities of Stow and Munroe Falls were settled as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve lands laid out in townships in what is now Northeast Ohio. Named after Joshua Stow of Connecticut, Stow Township consisted of rolling hills, dales, and lakes, with the Cuyahoga River running through the southwest corner. The first large party of pioneers arrived in Stow Township in 1804 with William Wetmore. A second group arrived with William Stow (cousin of Joshua) in 1809. By the end of the 19th century, the citizens of Stow and Munroe Falls had turned the wilderness into two villages with schools, churches, businesses, and social activities. The collection of images in this book showcases the connection between the two communities as they grew from rural villages to cities entering the 21st century.

After a long period of research, development, test and trial, relational database management systems are at last being marketed in force. The feedback from early installations of these systems is overwhelmingly positive. The most frequent comment by users is that productivity has been increased by a significant factor (from 5 to 20 times what it was using previous approaches). Another comment is that, in many cases, end users can now handle their own problems by direct use of the system instead of using application programmers as mediators between them and the system. As the reputation of relational systems for ease of use and enhanced productivity has grown, there has been a strong temptation for vendors of other approaches to exploit the label "relational" somewhat indiscriminately. In some cases the label is being misapplied to a whole data system; in others it is being misapplied to an interface. It is therefore worth developing criteria which database management systems (DBMSs) should have in order to be called "relational". The Relational Task Group (RTG) of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) undertook such an effort by developing a characterization of RDBMSs and analyzing fourteen DBMSs per this characterization. The result of this work is presented in this book. The conclusions of the RTG are in agreement with my view that a DBMS should not be called "relational" unless it satisfies at least the following conditions: 1. All information in the database is represented as values in tables.

The present issue is a small one, of two hundred and fifty copies, intended mainly for presentation to my professional colleagues in this country and in America, and to a few of those friends on the Continent who have overwhelmed me with their hospitality at various International Shorthand Congresses it may, I hope, secure some critical review in the Press some copies may find a place in public and private libraries or collections. In the circumstances, I do not think I need offer apology for the rather unusually intimate tone of this Preface. The system is presented as compiled, by a practical Shorthand Writer, for the use of those who desire to become practical Shorthand Writers. Its general idea may be illustrated by the quotation of a passage from an article I wrote in a Shorthand magazine, as far back as I895 1 The great vice of the few systems I know is the absence of joinable vowels. I think the inventor of a really good practical system will begin at the other end of the stick. Former authors seem to have taken the various materials at their command, and allocated the best outlines to the most frequently recurring consonants, the vowels being provided for out of what remained The coming author will give of his best to the vowels.
